The half-size you can't order

Feet swell over a day. Not slightly — by around four percent in volume, and more if you're standing, walking or in the heat. That's roughly the difference between a size 8 and a size 8 and a half.

Which means the shoe that fits perfectly when you try it on in the morning may be too tight by four in the afternoon. And the shoe that felt slightly loose at 9am is often the one that's actually right.

Almost nobody accounts for this when buying shoes, and it's the single most common reason a pair ends up unworn.

What makes room for it

Width across the forefoot. Not overall size — width specifically. A shoe that's the right length but narrow across the toes has nowhere to give when your foot spreads. The toe box is where a day's swelling has to go.

Upper material that flexes. Leather and knit uppers accommodate change through the day. Stiffer synthetics don't, which is why they feel fine in a shop and unforgiving by evening.

Fastening that adjusts. Laces you can loosen, straps you can move a hole. A slip-on that fits at 9am has no answer at 5pm.

None of that is visible in a product photo. All of it is in the specification, or answerable by someone who has handled the shoe.

What we look for

Midsole density, not initial softness. A sole that feels plush in the first thirty seconds is often too soft for a full day — your foot needs something to work against. What matters is how it performs in hour eight, and that's determined by density.

A sole tested for the surface. Wet pavement, loose ground, indoor flooring. Grip isn't one feature among many; it's most of the point.

Room for your own insoles. People who walk a lot often have insoles they trust. A shoe they don't fit into is a shoe they can't use.

Construction that survives a season. Not how a pair looks new, but how it looks after five days a week for several months.

Plenty doesn't clear that list. That's why the range stays small enough that we can tell you something specific about every pair.

What we don't claim

Our footwear isn't a medical device. It isn't intended to diagnose, treat, cure or prevent any condition, and nothing here is medical advice.

If you have a diagnosed foot condition, a circulatory condition or another clinical need, a healthcare professional is the right person to ask — not a shoe retailer.

What we sell is comfortable footwear for people who spend a lot of time on their feet. That's a real problem and it doesn't need dressing up as something clinical.

What we don't do

Chase trends. Footwear that dates is footwear you replace early.

Inflate prices to discount them. The price is the price. It doesn't go up in October so it can come down in November.

Overpromise. A pair of shoes won't transform a long day. What good footwear does is quieter — you stop thinking about your feet somewhere in the afternoon, instead of counting down from mid-morning.

Ask us before you order

Not sure about the size, whether the sole grips on wet ground, or whether your own insoles will fit?

Email us. Tell us the size you normally take, which brand it's from, and whether you have a wide or narrow foot — we'll tell you honestly which pair works, or that none of them does.

And when you're deciding between two sizes, tell us. Trying them on in the evening is more informative than the morning.
